Twenty-year-old Washington native Sara Cullen had a vampire problem.
And before you even ask, NO she's not one of THOSE Cullens. But try telling that to the legions of lost bloodsuckers who wandered into her hometown of Beaver because they missed the exit for Forks. Vampires can be so stupid.
But soon another monster came to town that made the star struck vampires look like cute defenseless puppies. I'm talking about zombies. The zombie plague swept into, and quickly overwhelmed, Sara’s small town. Within days normal life ended. Within weeks there were more ghouls than humans. Finally, a mere three months after the start of the plague, Sara and her friend Jessie Sparks were the only live people left in their corner of Washington.
Or so they thought. But then a handsome stranger wandered into town, and everything Sara and Jessie thought they knew about life in post-zombie-apocalypse Beaver turned upside down.

Nothing ever happened in Beaver, Washington, the small blue-collar town just north of Forks. Even the occasional vampires who mistakenly wandered into town didn't cause too much of a problem, especially with the Anti-Vamp! antidote on hand. But just three months ago when the first wayward zompire - that's right, a zombie vampire - arrived in town with a taste for flesh and blood, things got seriously out of hand.
Now, with a decimated population, Sara Cullen and her friend Jessie are the last remaining living resident of Beaver. That is until Keelan Gray arrives with a plan to help them get out of town. But with the zombies outnumbering the living, will they be able to make it out alive?

North of Forks is a funny yet gruesome addition to this monthly series of short thrillers. Another fast read, this gory tale of vampires and zombies also ends on a dark note.
In this installment, author Shana Hammaker infuses humor into the story, giving readers a chuckle as they experience the grim reality along with Sara in her zombie-infested hometown of Beaver, Washington. By now, fans of the author will be expecting a twist, and Ms. Hammaker does not disappoint.
Once again, all the ingredients are there to make this story feel complete, although this would also be great as a longer novella. Superbly written, this story has the feel of some of Stephen King's early short works.

North of Forks Twelve Terrifying Tales for 2011 eBook Shana Hammaker Reviews
North of Forks takes Twilight and pokes it in the eye. I like how it played off of Twilight, really poking fun at it. The surprise ending was great. Following the story was a little rough at times but nothing that would ruin it. For a short, it made lunch time a bit more exciting.
This is the second book I've read by this author and I've totally enjoyed it. There is something about the dialog and the pace that makes it an easy fun read. Nothing serious and you understand this from the beginning. I don't mean that it is exactly humorous, but maybe a little quirky. I like short pieces at times. This story fit that and held my interest and often made me smile. I am certainly looking forward to getting her next work and then the next and on to the end of her short stories. I expect them to all be this good. Sort of a vampire and zombie story, but certainly with unique twists. What an imagination!
This short story really surprised me for one simple reason ... I'm not one who generally reads books about zombies and vampires. However, I loved this book. I found the dialogue between Hammaker's three main characters very believable, allowing the reader to really imagine what a post-apocalypse existence might be like. The story had several wonderful twists and a very clever, satisfying ending. This is a book one can enjoy in a single evening, as the action takes hold and makes you want to keep reading 'til the end. I highly recommend this book.
I'm one of those people who loves the show "The Walking Dead", but who also finds a series like Twilight to be ridiculous.
So this story was perfect for me ;-)
There's no time spent dramatizing vampires and romancing it up in "North of Forks"; it's simply a world where vampires and vampire/zombie hybrids are a reality of the town. And where the "anti-vamp" cream can only do so much ;-).
The author paints a vivid picture of a town taken over, and offers a good amount of action amidst humor and a personalized narrative.
It was fun, it had good attacks and it kept me reading; well done!

Washington born, Sara Cullen, no not those Cullens, at one point had a vampire problem, but now her biggest problem isn't the bloodsuckers, it's the zombies.
The zombie plague swept into and quickly overwhelmed, Sara's small town of Beaver. Just 3 months after the plague started, Sara and her best friend Jessie Sparks were the only people left in their corner of the state. That is until an attractive stranger wanders into town and everything they knew gets turned upside down.
North of Forks is the 2nd installment in Shana Hammaker's short thriller series Twelve Terrifying Tales for 2011. The tale started out slightly off putting, as I am not a fan of Twilight in the slightest, but it gets better with some witty dialogue and some fun yet gruesome action scenes. Sara and Jessie are definitely your typical 20-something BFF's and you can see this very distinctly when the stranger comes to town. North of Forks has quite a few twists and an ending that I was not expecting. Yet another entertaining and very humorous story from the mind of Shana Hammaker.
North of Forks is one of those silly short works that, if you are a fan of all things undead, is worth giving a read. Even if you are tired of all things undead, this rather tongue-in-cheek tale of vampires and zombies infesting a small town will give you a chuckle. And sometimes, that is all you really want.
The story is narrated by Sara Cullen, a 20 year old resident of Beaver, Washington, a town less than ten minutes from Forks, Washington . If the location sounds familiar, it should. But as Sara rather angrily points out, she is not one of THOSE Cullens. Sara and her friend Jessie find themselves trying to survive not only an influx of clueless vampires who apparently have poor direction sense, but also a zombie infestation.
The first person narrative works for the story, even if it gets a bit choppy at times. Sara tends to dictate events instead of engaging in actual storytelling, so at times the narrative gets a bit dry. Some incidents in the story are a bit over the top, but considering the scope of the subject matter can be forgiven. If you are looking for serious dark fiction, this is not for you. But if you just want a light, amusing read featuring stupid zombies, hapless vampires and frustrated twentysomethings trying to survive, you will like this book.
